Inhalt	Teil 1: Contested Spaces: Gender, ‘Race’, and Class in a Historical and Contemporary Perspective (Übung), WS 2020/21, online, di 12-14 Teil 2: Girl, Woman, Other – Representations of Femininity in Contemporary British Cultures (Übung), WS 2020/21, online, mi 12-14 In this module, students will study gender politics in US and UK culture, and how these have developed over time and intersect with other identity/social categories like ethnicity and class. Part 1 takes a comparative approach to a wide range of culturally contested spaces when dealing with gender, ‘race’, and class identities in American literature and culture from the 18th century to the present. Students will scrutinize literary, visual, and audiovisual narratives concerning the construction of social identities and their intersectional dimensions. Through our weekly interactions and discussions of primary sources and theoretical texts about identity politics, students will gain deeper insight into the ongoing power struggle of minorities in the United States as well as their community-based and self-empowering strategies when fighting against systemic sexism, racism, and classism. In Part 2 students will analyse how various cultural 'texts', including examples from fiction, TV, social and print media, create and/or deconstruct certain (ideological) notions about femininity. They will also pay attention to the way in which (self-)representations of femininity intersect with other categories of identity such as class, ethnicity and sexuality. First, we will study theoretical writings on femininity and intersectional feminism and apply them to a selection of cultural 'texts'. In the second part of the seminar, students will develop their own research projects by analysing a cultural representation of their choice in small groups, presenting their results to the class as well as receiving peer-feedback. It is essential for the success of the seminar that participants are willing to make an active contribution to class discussions and motivated to conduct their own small research projects.
Lernziele	Verständnis theoretischer Texte verschiedener Fachrichtungen (interdisziplinäre Kompetenz), Analyse und Verständnis von Grundbegriffen der Cultural Studies (interkulturelle Kompetenz), Analyse historischer Quellen, Erweiterung der Sprachkompetenz.
