Inhalt |
Teil 1: Black British Literature, Film and Television (Übung), WS 2020/21, online, fr 14-16 Teil 2: Afrofuturism: An Introduction (Übung), WS 2020/21, online, fr 10-12 In this module, students will study ‘ethnic’ texts of British and Commonwealth literature against the background of social, historical and theoretical discussions of race, ethnicity and racism. Part 1 commences with a historical overview and a discussion of what Stuart Hall calls the “relations of representation” and the “politics of representation” as regards the depiction of Black British people in literature, film and television. There will be a reading of (excerpts from) key works in critical race studies. These critical lenses will be applied to a range of contemporary texts of different media and genres, to explore how these texts negotiate the complexities of being both Black and British in their intersections with class, gender and sexuality. There will be five Zoom sessions in the dedicated time slots – one by way of introduction and four to discuss the primary texts. Prior to these sessions, you will be asked to post research questions for the analysis on Moodle. A selection of these questions will provide the basis for discussion in the Zoom sessions. All others will be open to discussion via an etherpad. Part 2 takes as its focus a relatively new theoretical, artistic, and cultural phenomenon: Afrofuturism. We will discuss early afrofuturist interventions and trace the movement of ideas and concepts between the UK, USA, and the African continent. Source material will include novels ( The Ballad of Beta-2& Empire Star by Samuel R. Delaney; Everfair by Nisi Shawl), films ( The Last Angel of History by John Akomfrah, Pumzi by Wanuri Kahiu), and graphic novels ( Captain Rugged by Keziah Jones, Octavia Butler’s Kindred by Damian Duffy and John Jennings). By bringing these different texts and imageries together we will discuss questions of race, technology, speculative fiction, and alternative forms of being in this world, together. |
