Teil 1: British Verbatim Plays (Seminar), Montags, 12-14, Beginn: 15. April 2024 (Dozentin: Pankratz) (2 CP), (050850) Teil 2: World in Words: Verbatim Project : Workshop and Performance (Übung), Mittwochs, 14-16, Beginn 17. April bis 15. Juni (7 Termine) + 13./14. Juni jeweils 18-21 Uhr Aufführung: 15. Juni 2024 (Dozentin: Mucha) (3 CP), (050851) Teil 1: British Verbatim Plays (Seminar) Verbatim means “in exactly the same words as were used originally” and verbatim drama does just that, using authentic words spoken by other people. It is based on documentary material: court documents, for example, interviews or recordings. Thus, verbatim plays suggest a high degree of authenticity and objectivity. But someone arranged the quotes in order to tell a story and occasionally also changed the words a bit. The authentic words create a world that is different from unfiltered and real reality. The seminar will have a closer look at this relationship between word, world and stage. How effective is verbatim drama as a form of political intervention? What are the performative ramifications of verbatim plays? Which ideologies do they transport? Students will analyse a broad range of British verbatim plays in their respective socio-cultural and dramatic contexts. At the same time, they will get to know material and strategies to work on their own verbatim project. Texts: Students are asked to buy (and read) the following plays: David Hare, The Permanent Way Gregory Burke, Black Watch Alecky Blythe, Little Revolution Alecky Blythe, London Road Workload: short writing assignments in connection with the project. Teil 2: Verbatim Project The practical work will give students the opportunity to develop and finalise their own verbatim project. We will take a closer look at techniques that help molding an interesting, entertaining and original narrative and how this in turn can be turned into a performance that will capture the audience’s attention. The project will be presented on stage. Workload: active participation, finalization of a production draft, active participation in production dramaturgy. |
