Teil 1 und 2: Deinstitutionalisation as a process of social inclusion (lecture), Dates tba
The lecture deals with the core assumptions and course of the process of
deinstitutionalization, understood as a transition from solving social problems by means of institutions of collective residence and segregated systems to support for specific groups in local communities. The topics primarily concern the situation of people with disabilities, but also groups such as people in foster care, people in crisis of homelessness, the elderly.
Inhaltliche Beschreibung Teil 1 und 2: The classes cover issues of Polish social policy set in the European and global context. The social policy perspective is combined with a
sociological perspective. Both the tools and mechanisms of deinstitutionalization will be
discussed, as well as the social aspects of moving away from segregated support to
community-based support.
1. Introduction. Basic principles of deinstitutionalization. History of institutionalization and deinstitutionalization.
2. Institutions of collective residence as 'total institutions'.
3. Deinstitutionalization of foster care.
4. Homelessness and deinstitutionalization.
5. Senior citizen policy.
6 Disability and deinstitutionalization.
7. Toward deinstitutionalization: emancipation movements.
8. Tools of deinstitutionalization: personal assistance.
9. Tools of deinstitutionalization: sheltered/assisted housing.
10. Inclusive education as part of deinstitutionalization.
11. Deinstitutionalization of psychiatric services.
12. Segregated employment and open labour market. Supported employment.
13. Support in local communities - circles of support, self-advocacy, institutional support.
14. Troubles of deinstitutionalization. |
Lernziele |
1. Knowledge.
Student develops knowledge on social policy, especially:
a.he/she learns English terminology in the field of the social policy,
b.he/she understands relationships between ideology, economy, society and public politics,
c.he/she understands the principles of deinstitutionalization and social inclusion,
d.he/she knows basic approaches to different social groups in modern social policy.
2. Skills: After completing the course a student is able:
a.to interpret tendencies in social policy,
b.to interpret specific tools of deinstitutionalization,
c.to assess effectiveness of the tools and mechanisms of deinstitutionalization.
3. Competences/attitudes: After completing the course a student:
a.has competences in the field of deinstitutionalization policy analysis,
b.is able to analyse social policy towards various groups on his/her own,
c.is able to assess observed tendencies in deinstitutionalization. |
