Inhalt |
Teil 1: Religion in Modernity, Sommersemester 2025, Fr 14-16, Universitätsstr. 90a, Raum 0.13, Fr. 14 – 16 Uhr The relationship between religion and modernity and the nature of religion within modernity have been central questions in the social sciences since their inception. This lecture explores different systematic and theoretical approaches to the role and transformation of religious traditions in the modern period, extending from the late 18th century to the present. The course will be structured around the following core topics: 1. Modernity as a Historical Epoch • Modernity as Project • Modernity as Structure • ‘Postmodernity’ 2. Religious Transformations in the Modern Period (Regional Case Studies) • Central Europe (Germany) • The Middle East • North America (USA) 3. Religion and Modernity – Concepts and Themes • Secularization, Individualization and Pluralization • Approaches to the Religion and Economy Nexus • Spirituality vs. Fundamentalism The lecture will take place in a hybrid format. Weekly videos as well as readings will be made available in English and German. Participation in regular hybrid online-offline sessions (every 2-3 weeks) is mandatory; you are invited to contribute in German or in English and we will translate as necessary. Teil 2 (Wahlpflichtkurs): Religion and Nationalism, Sommersemester 2025 , Universitätsstraße 90a, Raum 0.13, Do 14-16 – Kurssprache: Englisch This course examines the complex relationship between religion and nationalism across different geographical regions, religious traditions, and historical periods. It investigates how religion has been employed to construct national identities, legitimize political power, and mobilize social movements, as well as the tensions and conflicts that arise in these processes. Students will engage with interdisciplinary scholarship, case studies, and theoretical frameworks to develop a nuanced understanding of key approaches to the study of religion and nationalism as well as to critically assess the role of religion in nation-building, identity formation, and political mobilization. Teil 3 (Wahlpflichtkurs): Contemporary Religiosity, Sommersemester 2025, Universitätsstraße 90a, Raum 0.13, Mo 14-16 – Kurssprache: Englisch Contemporary religiosity reflects the ways individuals and communities experience and practice religion today. While traditional religious institutions and doctrines remain influential, they coexist with individualized and privatized forms of spirituality and new collective religious phenomena. The spectrum ranges from fundamentalist currents in established religions to diffuse “new spirituality”. The emerging forms and expressions of religion often blur the traditional distinction between sacred and secular. The seminar will provide insights into this new religious phenomena from a sociological perspective. It will address issues such as the meaning of the terms “religiosity” and “spirituality”; secular religion; new functional equivalents of established forms of religion; nonreligious spirituality and the intersection of religion and popular culture, etc |
