Inhalt Teil 1: Avicenna’s Philosophy: A Milestone in the History of Philosophy (englischsprachig) (Vorlesung, Prof. Dr. Andreas Lammer ( andreas.lammer@rub.de , 050101), SoSe 2026, Fr., 12-14 Uhr Teil 2: term paper on one of the topics covered in the course Dieses Modul bietet eine Einführung in die Philosophie der islamisch geprägten Welt anhand der Vorstellung eines der einflussreichsten Denker seiner Zeit, Ibn Sīnā (gest. 428/1037), im Westen bekannt als Avicenna. Er war nicht nur Arzt, sondern vertrat die theoretische Philsophie in seiner gesamten Breite. Sein vielfältiges Oeuvre wird im enzyklopädischen Buch über die Heilung ( aš-Šifāʾ ) sichtbar. Ergänzt wird dieser Überblick durch eine Vertiefung im Selbststudium zu einem Thema der Vorlesung. Inhaltliche Beschreibung Teil 1 The Arabic-Islamic philosopher and polymath Avicenna (d. 428/1037) is one of the most influential thinkers of all time. His philosophy is the result of a thorough and comprehensive reconsideration of basically all ancient and late ancient philosophy, offering a new, up-to-date paradigm of Peripatetic thought: Aristotle was only almost right – now Avicenna completes the project, confident that little would remain for posterity to revise. What is truly remarkable is that Avicenna’s vision of theoretical philosophy – especially in logic, natural philosophy, and metaphysics – was widely read for centuries throughout the Islamic world and, through Latin and Hebrew translations, also exerted a profound influence on other intellectual traditions up to the Renaissance, during which Avicenna’s works were bestsellers on the printed book market. In the past, university instruction on Avicenna often had to focus on one or another area of his philosophy, depending on what was already available in translation. Now, with more and more translations becoming accessible, it is finally possible to offer a lecture course that provides a broader introduction to Avicenna’s philosophy. In this spirit, the lecture will offer central readings from Avicenna’s masterpiece, The Cure ( al-Šifāʾ ), which covers all 22 disciplines of theoretical philosophy, and will introduce students to all areas of his philosophical system, including texts from logic, natural philosophy, psychology, and metaphysics. Conditions for participation : There are no special requirements for participation in this course. Organization of the course: Presentations, slides, podcasts, and texts provide basic information as well as opportunities for in-depth study. Type of examination : Written exam in the first week after the end of the lecture period. Inhaltliche Beschreibung Teil 2: Guided in-depth independent study and term paper on one of the topics covered in the course Organisation der Lehrveranstaltung The independent study will be supervised individually via email and during office hours.
Lernziele By the end of this lecture course, students will be able to understand and explain key concepts and arguments in Avicenna’s philosophy – especially concerning his logic, natural philosophy, psychology, and metaphysics – and assess their historical-philosophical significance within the broader intellectual traditions of the Islamic world. Teil 1: Die Vorlesung vermittelt einen fundierten Überblick über die Geschichte der Philosophie am prominenten Beispiel Avicenna und führt in zentrale Konzepte und Argumente seiner Logik, Naturphilosophie, Psychologie und Metaphysik ein. Teil 2: Das angeleitete Selbststudium ermöglicht die Erprobung forschenden Lernens durch die eigenständige, wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung eines Teilaspekts von Avicennas Werk und Wirkung.
